Chiswick Auctions are delighted to present a significant collection of works designed by George Tinworth for the Doulton Lambeth factory, dating from the late nineteenth century. The collection was built by Pat and David Redstone, who purchased stoneware and porcelain over several decades, always guided by the pieces that they found most appealing.

George Tinworth (British 1843-1913) for Doulton Lambeth ‘The Cockneys at Brighton’ mice group. Estimate £3,500 - £4,500
George Tinworth attended Lambeth School of Art from around 1861 to 1864, where he trained as a modeller. After the death of his father, when Tinworth needed work to support his family, the headmaster at the Lambeth School of Art persuaded his friend Henry Doulton to offer him a job decorating pottery.

George Tinworth (British 1843-1913) for Doulton Lambeth ‘The Potters’ mice group menu holder. Estimate £1,500 - £2,000
Until his arrival, Doulton had dabbled in decorative wares but with little success and primarily focused on making functional products such as drain pipes. In 1867, Tinworth began working as a modeller with the Doulton potteries in Lambeth, where he remained for the rest of his life.

George Tinworth (British 1843-1913) for Doulton Lambeth Seaweed ewer. Estimate £150 - £250
Tinworth played a central role in Doulton’s success at major international exhibitions in 1867, 1871 and 1873. Between 1866 and 1885 he exhibited at the Royal Academy. In 1875 he presented a series of small terracotta panels depicting religious scenes which were praised by John Ruskin and led to several commissions for public statuary.
Tinworth became Doulton's most important designer of vases, jugs, figures and animals and today he is probably best known for his humorous figural mice groups. Chiswick Auctions are delighted to be able to offer several examples of these highly sought after whimsical creations, as well as the rare set of the four seasons panels and other decorative items by Tinworth.
