James has dedicated his entire career to the auction world, building a formidable reputation as a specialist in Modern British and Irish Art. He began his journey in the West Country as a Saleroom Manager and Valuer before joining Bonhams in London. There, he transitioned from the Prints & Multiples division to become a cornerstone of the principal Modern British & Irish Art department. During his tenure, the department experienced exponential growth, with James playing a pivotal role in curating significant single-owner collections and securing museum-quality works.

Now serving as the Head of the Pictures Department division, as well as Head of the specialist Modern British & Irish Art department, James drives the strategic vision and expansion across multiple specialist art divisions. Under his leadership, the department has achieved consistent year-on-year growth and hosts three highly anticipated Modern British & Irish Art auctions annually. Notable career highlights at Chiswick include the sale of exceptional single-owner collections, a museum-quality John Craxton self-portrait for £140,000, and David Hockney’s View from Miramar Hotel, Santa Monica for £400,000.
