Chiswick Auctions is delighted to offer a distinguished selection of fine and rare wines from the private cellar of the late Michael Hasslacher. This exceptional collection will form a dedicated section of our upcoming Wine & Spirits Auction on Thursday 12 June 2025.
Taylors 1955, Estimate £200 - £360
Throughout the 20th century, German wine enjoyed significant popularity in the UK, with household names like Deinhard Green Label and Hans Christof Kabinett leading the charge. Under the guidance of the Hasslacher brothers, the company expanded its offerings in the 1960s, adding Taylor’s Port to their portfolio and pioneering the launch of the highly successful Late Bottled Vintage (LBV). They also acted as UK agents for prestigious brands including Barbeito Madeira, Château de Malliac Armagnac, Prosper Maufoux Burgundy, Emilio Lustau Sherry, and even contributed to the rise of The Famous Grouse for Matthew Gloag.
Many of these outstanding wines are featured in this cellar collection, alongside rare Deinhard bottlings. It is a truly unique opportunity to acquire wines that reflect a lifetime of passion and deep expertise in the industry.
Schlossbockelheimer Felsenberg Riesling Beerenauslese, Estimate £360 - £620
Michael Hasslacher was widely respected in both professional and sporting circles. An accomplished cricketer during his time at The Oratory School—where generations of his family had studied since 1907—he famously scored 72 at Lord’s in 1957 against Beaumont College. A dedicated sportsman, he went on to found and chair the Wine & Spirits Sports Society, a charitable organisation that has raised nearly £1 million in support of those in the trade facing hardship.
As a liveryman, Michael was deeply involved with the historic Vintners’ Company, eventually serving as its Master. This ancient institution, one of the Great Twelve City Livery Companies, received its Royal Charter in 1363 from Edward III.
Oestricher Doosberg Riesling Auslese 1959, Estimate £260 - £380
It was evident upon viewing Michael’s private cellar that he had set aside a number of exceptional bottles for the most special of occasions. His son, James, fondly recalls that wines such as Bernkasteler Doctor were reserved for Christmases and milestone birthdays. A Beerenauslese or Trockenbeerenauslese—wines known for their remarkable richness—was always served with cheese or as a memorable conclusion to a meal.
Of all varietals, German Riesling is renowned for its ageing potential, with its balance of acidity, sugar, and alcohol acting as natural preservatives. Remarkably, some Rieslings have remained drinkable since the early 18th century—a testament to the enduring legacy of German wine.
Rudesheimer Berg Rottland Riesling Spatlese Trocken 1985, Estimate £160 - £240
