Specialist Jewellery & Watches Auction Report - Tuesday 8th August 2014 - 20% commission + VAT

The Specialist Jewellery & Watches sale was a first-rate financial boost at Chiswick Auctions running up to the quieter summer auctions of August. It was the last of the specialist auctions before the big launch in September and October where specialist auctions will be held every week. Chiswick is also adding specialist Wednesday auctions for the Fine Printed Books & Manuscripts and Antique Toys, Dolls & Teddy Bear sales.

The Jewellery sale had many unusual items for sale and reached a very wide audience within the saleroom, on the internet and telephones.

Two outstanding lots on the day were lot 104 with an estimate of £300-500, the 70’s Heuer Carrera gents’ wristwatch had lots of interest and eventually sold for £1000 because of its honest condition and style; it was a fantastic result as you’re unlikely to find another like it, making it a sound investment. While lot 254 the Victorian 15ct gold ladies watch in its wonderful original condition and fitted case, was the bargain of the day despite smashing its modest estimate of £400-600, with lots of interest it finally sold for £1000.

Apart from the large amounts of money spent on the day one of the interesting points that stood out with this sale was that one buyer was the main bidder, the unnamed gentleman was not about to be out bid on any piece he had set his heart on and kept his paddle in the air until he won each lot. While this was heart warming for Chiswick Auctions it really put the dealers in a position of hardly being able to touch some of the prices realised. The gentleman spent enough to buy a small flat in the suburbs. While we do not suggest this is a safe option because of the risk level allowing one bidder to buy half of the jewellery in the sale, the client was well known to the directors William Rouse and Leigh Osborne who had both agreed on this occasion to allow it, while not knowing what he was actually going to buy or for how much!
