Titus van Rijn was one of two children of Rembrandt’s to survive into adulthood. His mother was Saskia van Uylenburgh.
The intimate capturing of reading becomes the subject of this work, where the figure is situated in a dark space, lit only in certain areas, highlighting the face and hands.
