Notes:

Dr. John Murray (1809-1898) was a Scottish photographer and medical doctor. He was introduced to photography while serving in the Medical Service of the Army of the East India Company, in 1849. In India, where he lived and worked for 40 years, he developed a particular interest in the Mughal architecture. Indeed, he photographed Agra’s buildings, as well as architecture of the northern state of Uttar Pradesh. Certainly, Murray produced an extensive body of work documenting India's architecture, work that remained unmatched in the 1800s. Since at the time there was no simple method of enlarging photographs, Murray worked with a large-format wooden camera and with both glass and waxed-paper negatives.
