The present lot is a maquette which refers to the artist's full-scale sculpture of W.B. Yeats made in 1989. The sculpture was erected in Sligo, outside Ulster Bank on Stephen Street. It was unveiled by Senator Michael B. Yeats in 1990.

The artist's grandparents were well acquainted with the Yates family. It was this personal collection to W.B.Yeats that inspired this image of W.B Yates. Memories of him were that he would always arrive in a flourish of arrogant exuberance spounding words of wisdom. This was how Gillespie choose to portray him.
