An album of approx. 200 mixed albumen and early silver gelatin prints, image size 12 x16.6cm (smaller) to 26.6 x21cm (largest), pasted down onto album pages recto/verso, overall measuring 39 x30cm, most captioned [in German] and dated in ink on margin; some signed, and titled in the negative. Photographers include Skeen &Co. (10), Bourne (2), Scowen &Co. (4), Colombo Apothecaries Co. (6), signed and titled in the negative.
Subjects include a group of prints documenting the journey of the German warship Oldenburg across Egypt, China, Japan, and South Korea in 1897; group portraits of the officers; the warship passing through the Suez Canal; Port Said Harbour; Yantai Harbour; Kobe; Kiantschan (Jiaozhou); Nagasaki; Shanghai; and Chemulpo, among others; and street views of the cities the warship stopped by; various prints depicting the S.M.S Kaiser; S.M.S Cormoran; and their ship's company.
Together with a group of prints depicting views of Ceylon, such as Pont-des-Galle; Dehiwala; the famous Colombo to Kandy railway, and ta train on Sensation Rock by Scowen &Co. (3); Kandy Lake; a group portrait of young Tamil women by Skeen &Co.; street views of Ceylon villages; workers organizing coffee beans on a plantation; and landscape views of Ceylon forests, among others.
