A large George III sterling silver salver, London 1814 by William Burwash

Of circular form with gadrooned border interspaced with shell and oak leaf motifs. Raised on three lion paw and acanthus rosette fluted bracket feet. The field centre later engraved with an impaled and quartered coat of arms, with motto below 'Deo Non Fortuna' all surmounted by a crest of a an ostrich holding in his beak a horseshoe. Fully marked to reverse.

The crest and motto are for Digby

The arms are for Wingfield quartering Digby, quartering Digby, quartering Marriott, and Wingfield quartering Digby, impaling Blennerhassett.

For William George Digby Wingfield-Digby (1834 - 1907) whom married Geraldine de Courcey Blennerhassett (1843-1917) on the 10th August 1869. No issue. They lived at Chetnole House, Sherborne, Dorset, England. Wingfield-Digby was the son of Reverend John Digby Wingfield Digby (1799-1877), grandson of Henry Digby, 1st Earl of Digby (1731-1793), he married Anne Eliza Smith (1803-1859), first daughter of Sir John Wyldbore Smith, 2nd Baronet (1770-1852) and Elizabeth Anne Marriott (c.1767-1844). Geraldine de Courcey Blennerhassett (1843-1913) daughter of Reverend John Blennerhassett (1803-1890) and Elizabeth Houssemayne Du Boulay.

Another salver of 1817 by Burwash of the exact same form but with a differing coat of arms was sold at Woolley and Wallis, Salisbury, 26 June 2008, Lot 1153.

Provenance: sold Skinner inc. Boston, Marlborough, 15th July 2016, lot 32 ($2706 incl. Premium) The Estate of Hugh Trumbull Adams, to benefit the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation Collections Acquisitions Fund.

Burwash registered alone first mark Aug 1802 as a case maker. In partnership with Richard Sibley 1805-1812 as plateworkers. Three marks registered alone July 1812, Aug 1812 and April 1813, at 14 Bartholomew Close..
