A TUNISIAN CHEMLA POTTERY JAR WITH COVER
Tunis, Tunisia, North Africa, first half 20th century
Of rounded shape, the jar resting on a short thick foot rising to a wide circular opening, the cover with a gentle slope, rising to a flaring knob-like finial, painted in the typical Chemla palette of yellow, green, cobalt blue and manganese purple on an off-white ground, later added marks in pink and purple, the jar body and cover featuring a repeating design with green arches framing vertical floral roundels, the shoulders of the cover with a diamond pattern and almond-shaped fretwork band, the finial painted in monochrome green, marked to the base, 26cm high.
