Malaya: Motoring Map

Motoring Map of Malaya,

first edition, first printing, showing the extensive network of modern roads established along Malaya's west coast by the interwar period, scaled 12 miles to an inch, laid down on linen as issued, folding into original card boards with colour label on front cover, ink signature 'H. a. Denny' and address to printed label, Kuala Lumpur, F.M.S. & S.S. Survey Department, 1929.

***Malaya's road network grew in tandem with the expansion of British political and economic activity in the region. Improved transportation opened up the rubber plantations of the western states, consolidated communications between different administrative centres, and catered to a thriving community of expatriate car owners. By 1930, the region had almost 5,000 miles of roads, while the number of motoring licences issued increased by 1,500 percent between 1910 and 1930.
