Te Aho Rangi Wharepu was a veteran of the Battle of Rangiriri (1863) and chief of the Ngati Mahuta tribe. He had a substantial reputation as a canoe carver and tattoo specialist. He was also an authority on Maori mythology and history.
The original painting is in the collection of Dunedin Public Art Gallery, New Zealand.
