Unknown Photographer (XIX cent.)
Poti to Tiflis Railway, Georgia. c.1871.

A group of 4 albumen prints, image size 18.5 x24cm (smallest) to 19.5 x27.5cm (largest), pasted down onto card, overall measuring 30 x40.5, each with manuscript captions in pencil on card margins. Subjects include views of railway bridge construction over the Rioni River, near Kutaisi; a depot in Poti; and a locomotive crossing a newly built bridge.

In 1877, Kutaisi was connected to the Poti-Tbilisi railway line via a branch line. The construction of that branch was a major regional milestone that transformed the local economy and urban geography. During the following industrialisation, the population of Kutaisi grew to over 30,000. Since then, Kutaisi has become the traditional rival of Tbilisi for the capital status.
