Opaque pigments and black ink heightened with gold on wove paper, the vertical composition depicting a white-clad Indian ruler seated on a Western high chair, holding his tulwar sword on his lap, wearing several bands of golden necklaces around his neck, earrings with pearls on his ears and a white turban over his head, his forehead marked with a large red bindi (dot), the inscription in black ink Devanagari script above the portrait reading Nakur Saheb Shri Balwant Singh Ji, possibly referring to Raja Balwant Singh (1820–1853), the ruler of the princely state of Bharatpur in Rajasthan from 1825 till his death, set within black rules and thin white, cream and light green borders, 25cm x 20cm.
