AN 'EASTERN' KUFIC QUR'AN BIFOLIO
PROPERTY FROM A PRIVATE AMERICAN TRUST
Iran or Central Asia, 11th - 12th century
Sura An-Naba (78), vv. 36 - 40, Arabic manuscript on vellum, each folio with 7ll. of compact black ink 'Eastern' Kufic script, the first page in-filled with repeating circular decoration, significant words and passages in gold and outlined in black, with red diacritic marks, marginal markers in the shape of a blue and gold scalloped roundel and a palmette, 12cm x 9cm.
Provenance:
In the collection of the German-American Islamic Art historian Rudolf Meyer Riefstahl (9 August 1880 - 31 December 1936), professor at New York University, thence by descent;
Riefstahl's son sold it to Karel Wiest Antiques of Detroit, Michigan, USA, from whom the family of the present vendor acquired it in 1978.
