A George II provincial sterling silver tankard, Newcastle 1738 by James Kirkup (active c.1713 to 1753, d.1753)
Of gently tapering cylindrical form upon a spreading foot, the body with an applied central girdle, the double domed hinged lid raised by an open work chair back thumbpiece, with a moulded hinge section. The double C scroll handle unusually terminating in a large cast splayed scallop shell. Fully marked to the right of the handle, the lid with lion passant only to the centre of the dome.
