Iran, late 18th - 19th century
Arabic manuscript on paper, 371ff., plus 3 fly-leaves, each folio with 14ll. of naskh script in black ink, the opening bifolios and the start of Sura al-Isra' (also known as Bani Isra'il, 17) finely illuminated in polychromes and gold, with full diacritic marks in black, intonation marks and the word Allah in red ink, gold roundel verse markers, sura headings in white ink on burnished gold cartouches, marginal hizb markers in larger gold roundels, catchwords, set within gold, black, and polychrome rules, gold interlinear lines, in a polychrome-painted lacquered binding, the front and back embellished with paired symmetrical floral motifs, each endpaper with a floral tree beneath an arch, accompanied by a 19th-century cut-velvet envelope with crochet purple silk joints, the text panel 7cm x 4cm, the folio 10cm x 6.2cm.
