A George II provincial sterling silver cream jug, Chester probably 1740 by Richard Richardson II (active 1732 – 1772)
Of baluster from upon a spreading circular foot, the short ‘sparrow beak’ spout opposite a double C scroll handle, the rim with an incised edge. Fully marked underneath, maker’s mark (Ridgeway Type A).
Height – 9 cm / 3.5 inches
Weight – 87 grams / 2.8 ozt
This jug may be that listed in Ridgeway, M. (1985). Chester Silver 1727 -1837. Sussex: Phillimore. p. 160, Jugs No 1. This jug, with same worn format of date letter is recorded there but the dimensions are not all a match, and this is recorded as being engraved with initials JNB in cursive script.
