A NEAR PAIR OF COBALT BLUE AND BLACK-PAINTED POTTERY BOWLS WITH ARABESQUE MOTIFS
Kashan, Iran, ca. 1200 - 1220
Each bowl of everted conical shape, with a flattened base and resting on a short, upright, circular foot, painted in cobalt blue and black against a white ground, each bowl presenting similar decorative patterns with minor variations on both the interior and exterior including cusped or drop-shaped medallions filled with arabesque motifs and interlocking split palmettes, foliage, vegetal meanders, and cobalt blue flowerheads, and a stylised frieze with half roundels or drops just below the rim, each approx. 19.5cm diam. and 8.5cm high.
