The finely embroidered yellow-ground silk robe, made from fine yellow silk brocade decorated with woven bats, further decorated with embroidered depicting various elaborate ruyi border roundels enclosing figurative garden scenes, surrounded by floral roundels and sprays and also flying peacocks, the elaborate ruyi collar depicting mythical beasts and floral scrolls, the outer borders with bands of mythical beasts and birds, the sleeves with a further band of garden scenes, with original gilt-metal buttons, the interior lined with pale pink silk

Lawrence W. Faucett (1892-1978) was an American writer, linguist, teacher and missionary. He was central to the development of English as a foreign language teaching during the 1920s and 1930s, and authored The Teaching of English in the Far East (1927) before going to create the first UK-published ‘general’ EFL course package, the Oxford English Course (1933). In 1922 Faucett travelled to China for the Board of Missions, Protestant Episcopal Church, starting work as an assistant professor of English at an Episcopalian institution, St. John’s University, in Shanghai. He continued to travel while compiling his linguistic research and took a PhD at the University of Chicago in 1926. As associate professor of English at Yenching University between 1927 and 1930, Faucett trained teachers of English, coordinated a study of typical errors by the staff of the English department, and taught a beginning class five times a week in a village near Yenching. He also taught part-time in the Mens’ and Womens’ Normal Schools in Peking. In 1930 Faucett moved with his family to Japan where he was associate professor of English at Aoyama Gakuin, a Christian university in Tokyo. Faucett spoke Chinese and some Japanese. In the mid-1950s he produced textbooks for the Japanese publisher Shinozaki Shorin. Mainly, however, his post-war research focussed on self-pubished texts on moral philosophy. Lawrence Faucett died in San Diego, having completed his final book, The Sayings of Confucius: A New Translation of the Analects Based Closely on the Meaning and Frequency of the Chinese Characters.

羅倫斯・W・福塞特（1892–1978）為美國作家、語言學家、教師及傳教士，於1920至1930年代在英語作為外語教學領域中扮演重要角色。他於1927年出版《遠東英語教學》，並於1933年創編首套在英國出版的通用英語教學課程《牛津英語課程》。

1922年，福塞特受美國聖公會差會派遣前往中國，任教於上海聖約翰大學，擔任英語助理教授。其後持續旅居亞洲並進行語言研究，並於1926年獲芝加哥大學博士學位。1927至1930年間，他任教於燕京大學，擔任英語副教授，培訓英語師資，主持英語系教師常見錯誤研究，並於燕京附近村落每週五次教授初級英語課程。此外，他亦兼任北京男女師範學校講師。

1930年，福塞特偕家人移居日本，任教於東京青山學院，該校為基督教大學。他通曉中文，亦略懂日語。1950年代中期，他為日本出版社篠崎書林編撰教科書。戰後研究則多集中於道德哲學領域，並以自費出版方式發表著作。福塞特於聖地牙哥辭世，臨終前完成其最後著作《孔子語錄：基於漢字意義與頻率之〈論語〉新譯》。
