AN UNUSUAL SILVER REPOUSSÉ PALASKA GUNPOWDER CARTRIDGE MILITARY CASE WITH ROSETTES
Greece or Balkans, Western Ottoman Provinces, late 18th - 19th century
Of compressed rectangular shape, with a flat hinged lid at the top surmounted by an openwork plaque with a pair of birds and vegetal trellis, the bottom featuring small hoops, possibly once attached to decorative chainlets, the gadrooned front designed in the shape of five tubular scroll holders, each one chased in high relief with vertical panels of Rococo-style motifs typically featured in Ottoman silver creations of the period, including lush rosettes, dense foliage and vegetal scrolls, and domes, a bird in the centre of the case, the flat back with a plain rectangular belt loop, the edges engraved with a stylised vegetal band with floral sprays on the corners, 12.5cm x 9.5cm, 279GR.
