A Victorian sterling silver mounted glass claret jug, London 1890 by Rupert Favell and Henry Elliott

The clear glass body of globular form cut with octagonal hobnail pattern, the spirally fluted mounted with a short pouring spout opposite a tubular right angled handle, a hinged disc lid. The spout engraved WTC above the date 26.2.92. Fully marked to the side and part-marked to the lid.

Height – 17.4 cm / 7.05 inches

The initials are for Walter Timon Coldham (1860-1908), thence by descent.

Walter Coldham the son of John Coldham (1822-1882) of Snettisham, Norfolk and his Irish wife Josephine Theresa Power Lane (1830-1900). He was born in Grassdale, Victoria, Australia. He matriculated at Hamilton College, Melbourne Gramma School and Melbourne University and was called to the Melbourne bar from 1884 – 1908, where he excelled in his legal profession to much commemoration in his obituary. He also excelled at sporting events, particularly for tennis as a George Woodall cameo glass vase of 1891 was presented to him on the 25th May 1892 as one of the first committee members of the newly established Lawn Tennis Association of Victoria and also of the Melbourne Cricket Club, sold Bonham’s New Bond Street, 17 Dec 2008, lot 398 (£36,000 incl. prem).

He married on the 27th November 1885 Edith Lucy Pinnock the daughter of James Denham Pinnock (c.1810-1875) and Martha Sybil Hurlock Clipperton (1831-1865), he being the first registrar to the Supreme Court of Victoria in 1840.
