Hipkins, an English musicologist specialised in the history of the piano and other instruments, published by Adam & Charles Black, Edinburgh (1888) first edition, the chapter dedicated to India including different examples of traditional wind, string and percussion instruments like the pillagovi (flute), mukavina (oboe) and tuturi (trumpet) from the first category; the kinnari (sitar), Bengali sarinda and Punjabi svaramandala (dulcimer) from the second category; and tara (cymbals), tabla (kettle drum) and nagara (drum) from the third category; each plate mounted on a white cardboard frame, each 31cm x 24.5cm excluding the mount.
