TWO LOOSE FOLIOS FROM A MANUSCRIPT OF JAMI'S YUSUF O ZULAIKHA
Kashmir, Northern India, late 18th century
Persian manuscript on paper, the text in black nasta’liq script, the illuminations in opaque pigments heightened with gold, the vertical compositions depicting scenes of an angel bringing the jade staff to Jacob on one folio; and a young girl in love with Joseph deciding against betraying him to the caravan on the latter folio, mounted on cream cloth, glazed and framed, the back of the frames with ownership and old inventory stickers, Art Musulman - Joseph Soustiel, Paris; and the French Islamic art expert Marie-Christine David's labels 102B and 102D, French-typed labels inscribed Paris Mai 1973, the text panels 17cm x 9.5cm, 30.8cm x 23.5cm including the frames.
Provenance: part of the French Soustiel collection since the early 1970s.
