PROVENANCE:

English Private Collection of Zenga

Sengai Gibon (1750 – 1837) was a monk of the Rinzai Zen school. In 1789 he became the 123rd abbot of Shōfukuji, one of the oldest Zen temples in Japan. Gibon was renowned for his controversial teachings as much as his light-hearted ink paintings, often full of self-deprecating humour. He never considered his own works as serious art and was said to paint for anyone who requested it. Gibon spent his retirement at Genjū-an temple receiving guests, painting and teaching.
