A matched pair of George I / George II Britannia standard and sterling silver candlesticks, London 1715 by Richard Greene (reg. 15th April 1703) and London 1731 by James Gould (reg. 19th Nov 1722)

Of hexagonal form the stepped bases with knopped columns, each base engraved with a crest of a boar’s head erased, langed. Both fully marked underneath. (2)

An uncommon maker, Greene (Grimwade 2315) is known to have been apprenticed to George Moore in 1691, he later worked at Foster Lane and was Churchwarden of St. John Zachery in 1713-14. These candlesticks likely come from a George I set that was extended by the same family some 16 years later by Gould, a specialist candlestick maker, or to replace a lost or stolen original to it’s pair.
