Notes:
Baranov-Rossiné, a student of the Odessa Academy of Art (1903-1908) before studying alongside such seminal artists as Larionov, Goncharova and Burliuk at the St. Petersburg Academy (1908-9). In 1909, the painter, disillusioned with his studies at the St Petersburg Academy of Art, departed for Paris and from that point, he became a notable figure in Ecole de Paris, working under the pseudonym Daniel Rossiné.
He made himself known to the many Russian expatriate artists living in Paris and set up his studio in La Ruche (The Beehive), a notorious building in Montparnasse with artists, including Soutine, Chagall, Archipenko and Sonia and Robert Delaunay.
In the present work, the pools of colour give depth to the surface pattern consisting of curved forms. This dynamic makes the composition almost vibrate.
