Kelly traveled extensively in Egypt, Sudan, and other parts of the Middle East. These travels provided him with firsthand experiences and a wealth of material for his paintings and illustrations. His work often featured detailed landscapes, bustling street scenes, and carefully rendered architectural elements, all of which captured the essence of the places he visited, as can be seen in the present scene.
His work remains a significant example of Orientalist art, and his detailed watercolours continue to be admired for their technical skill and ability to convey the atmosphere of the places he depicted. His influence can be seen in the works of later artists who continued to explore themes of the exotic and the picturesque in foreign lands.
