Qing Dynasty, Qianlong mark and of the period
清乾隆 銅胎掐絲琺瑯蓮紋三足爐
《乾隆年製澄》楷書款
Formed with a bombé-shaped body supported by three cabriole legs and rising to a waisted neck below a protruding rim surmounted by a pair of slender upright handles, decorated to the exterior with cloisons worked to depict stylised polychrome lotus flowers issuing from scrolling leafy stems below a band of ruyi lappets and clusters of blossoms, all on a pale blue ground, the base with a square cartouche incised with a four-character Qianlong mark in a line above an additional cheng character

A related cloisonné enamel tripod censer is illustrated by Helmut Brinker and Albert Lutz in 'Chinese Cloisonné: The Pierre Uldry Collection', Zurich, 1989, nos. 245, 245a, in which they suggest that the additional character referred to either a location or when related pieces were assembled, and were also used to confer an auspicious message.
