ROYAL INTEREST: A 19TH CENTURY MAHOGANY LIBRARY CHAIR STAMPED WITH BUCKINGHAM PALACE INVENTORY NO.

ROYAL INTEREST: A 19TH CENTURY MAHOGANY LIBRARY CHAIR STAMPED WITH BUCKINGHAM PALACE INVENTORY NUMBER

the leather covered chair with lappet carved legs and brass castors, the rail to the underside stamped 'VR BPN 251 1866'

82cm high x 55cm wide

Provenance: Purchased from Butchoff Antiques on 26th October 2002, a copy of the invoice available upon request.

The stamp to the underside of the chair refers to Victoria Regina (Queen Victoria) and BPN was stamped on to furniture from Buckingham Palace. The Royal Collection have confirmed that 251 would refer to the room that the chair was located in; that room no longer exists but was where the Master of the Household's offices were located. Some close relations to the chair still exist in the Royal Collection today, and there were concerted dispersals from the residences in the early twentieth century which might be how the chair found its way into the public realm. Unfortunately the manuscript of the 1866 Buckingham Palace inventory is no longer known, so the Royal Collection cannot confirm any further information about the chair's history.

Estimated at £1,500 - £2,000
