Nightinghale (Florence):- Erskine (Mary) Autograph letter to Nightingale from Mary Erskine ('M.E.'), reads in part “I must send you a list of the names I promised the other day- Miss Mackenzie, Miss Veysie and myself always cooperated in the work for which we came out till the former left from ill health, to the great regret of us all. As for the nurses, those who came last as hospital nurses unfortunately had to be dismissed [...] for misconduct . We have now three who came out with us 18 months ago and are still here. They may be classed as average nurses but I fear I cannot claim for any of them a first class reward as you maintained (?) that was reward for those who had particularly distinguished themselves” and then mentioning Miss Ross, Miss Waterhouse and Miss Jones for the reward, three pages, mailing folds, ink slightly faded, 8vo, 13 July, 1856; with the response by Nightingale reading in part “I hope that you have arrived at home and are enjoying your rest- I have some day to see you again – But now I am only writing on business, and a business, I believe, equally disagreeable to us both. I am obliged to trouble you to send in to the War Office addressed to "The Right Hon. The Secretary of State for War, War Department, Horse Guards, London, the addresses and periods of service of the three nurses whom you mentioned to me, as to be recommended for their share of the Sultan's gifts" four pages, mailing folds, 8vo, Matlock, 1 September 1856; with original mailing envelope addressed to Erskine in Nightingale's hand (2) ***Provenance: The descendants of Mary Erskine, a volunteer nurse at the Naval Hospital at Therapia during the Crimean was.
