Silver gelatin print, printed c.1985, image size 14 x 22cm, sheet size 18 x 24cm, caption, including Magnum distribution credit, typed directly onto print verso, with additional copyright credit reproduction limitation stamps, and Japanese agency label affixed verso. As per the caption, this print was most likely used to publicise the 1985 publication of "W. Eugene Smith: Let Truth Be the Prejudice". The lengthy caption, which includes a short biography about Smith, notes distribution from the Magnum offices in Paris, with the addendum "NOT FOR PUBLICATION IN THE UNITED STATES".
"Pittsburg [sic] 1955-56 / Smith says that during 1955, he made approximately 11,000 exposures in and around the city of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He considered this to be his difinitive [sic] "essay" in which he inspired to create a portrait of a community scanning the entire range of the intricate web of social, economic, cultural, and political forces that make up a major industrial city / a steel foundry in Pittsburgh."
