For various intervals between 1956 and 1959, McIntosh taught at the Los Angeles Country Art Institute, now the Otis College of Art and Design, where he became friends with fellow teacher Peter Voulkos.
McIntosh worked for 50 years with Rupert Deese, a fellow student from Claremont Graduate school, first in the Foothill Boulevard space in Claremont California from 1950 to 1958, and then in a studio at Padua Hills until 2006.
Over his more than 60-year career, McIntosh had 43 solo exhibitions.
His work is represented in more than 40 museum collections including the Smithsonian Museum in Washington D.C., The Louvre, Paris, and the National Museum of Art in Tokyo.
