'THE WINTER' c.1750
A fine series depicting a Winter's agricultural scene. A set of 6 copper engraved card-backed, cut away sheets combining to create an early peep show, [105×142 mm] with original hand-colouring;

The cut aways depict; [1] two buildings and leafless trees frame the scene. On the left, a man and a woman are gathering bundles of wood. On the right, a man from behind looks at the scene in the following sheet; [2] in the centre, an ice skating scene. Two men are depicted, one of them sliding on the ground. On each side, houses and leafless trees; [3] outside a village, of which houses and a church are shown, two men go sledding in the distance; [4] more houses and a gate of a palace on either side, while in the centre of the sheet an aristocratic couple stands on a richly decorated sled carried by a horse; [5] a rural landscape with a palace in distance; [6] a wide landscape of a lake sailed by boats, surrounded by mountains and buidings on the lakesides.
