Calcutta circa 1850
A mid-19th century Indian colonial silver christening mug

of baluster form upon a shaped four section strapwork foot, a moulded rim with a double C scroll handle. The body with embossed decoration of arabesques reserved with lattice work. The front engraved with a contemporaneous inscription reading “Frederic Ralphs from his godfather Frederic Rogers”. Marked underneath H&C, elephant, Roman capital A, and lotus tally mark.

Height – 12.1 cm / 4.75 inches

Weight – 239 grams / 7.68 ozt

Notes:

A christening mug dated 1851 of similar form and the foot was sold Woolley and Wallis, 12 April 2022, lot 136 (£312.5 incl. prem)
