Notes:

Born to a sailing-master father, Carl Emil Baagoe showed early artistic promise and received drawing instruction, later attending classes at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts.

After training as a decorative painter, he devoted himself to studying ships and harbours, exhibiting his first marine works in the mid-1850s.

A grant from the Academy in 1864 supported further travel, including painting trips to Iceland and Norway.
