An album comprising albumen prints (22) mounted recto-verso to thick album pages, each measuring approx. 17 x 25cm, relating to Mysore and the Great Famine, c.1878. Subjects include a group photograph of 'ophans after the famine’; a view of the ‘Tumkur relief camp – feeding time’; ‘Tumkur orphanage’; two untitled prints of emaciated Indian men and women by Willoughby Wallace Hooper; a group portrait of Western Famine Commissioners; and additionally 4 cartes de visite portraits of British civil servants. Housed in a diced calf folio overall measuring 32 x 26cm, calligraphic inscription to front endpaper verso reading, ‘Presented to Mr C. A. Elliott C.S.I. Famine Commissioner of Mysore by Captain E. J. Ludlow and the Special Relief Officers of the Tumkur District, Mysore Province’, covers detached and lacking spine.
