Bert Hardy (1913-1995)
GORBALS BOYS, GLASGOW, 1948. Silver gelatin print, printed c.1960, image size 23cm x 30.5cm, sheet size 30.7 x 38cm, signed and dated by the photographer in felt-tip pen lower margin recto.
In January 1948, this iconic Bert Hardy image of two young boys running to a local shop in the Gorbals was published in Britain's pioneering photo journal 'Picture Post'. The article, which included three photographs by Bill Brandt alongside ten by Hardy, described the area as 'The Forgotten Gorbals', pushing for urgent social reform in the Gorbals, a working class district of Glasgow. This street scene would go on to become Hardy's best-known image -- a defining moment in a career that informed a distinctly British style of social documentary disseminated through the 'Picture Post'.
