Raj period. Of bottle or surahi form, of globular form with a tall tapering neck with a hinged lid surmounted by a finial of a beast, the handle formed as a hippocampus upon a mythical sea serpent, all upon a collet foot. The body with a section of chased acanthus leaves, flat chased with coriander pattern below a border of scallop shell and scrolls, the front with a vacant shield shape cartouche.

Notes:The surahi form was adapted to function as the European claret jug within Lucknow silversmithing, such as the example with a wavy pouring neck and handle in the V and A collection (778-1869).
