SPANISH-AMERICAN WAR, MANILA, c.1898-1900

A group of albumen and early silver prints (12), measuring between 8cm x 13.7cm (smallest) and 20 x 26.5cm (largest), most with pencil captions in two hands verso. Subjects include: a view of US troops entering along the beach carrying an American flag; exterior and interior views of Fort San Antonio showing effect of shells after 13 August; a group portrait of the E. 2nd Oregon Division; an American grave site; a group shot of a general with the office of the Advance Guard on horseback; an exterior view of Block House #14; a colour-tinted view of a house of a Spanish priest; an exterior view of a church after bombardment; a portrait of a baby in a bassinet; and a view of the Walled City from a window at the Manila Hotel. Accompanied by two letters, one typewritten and dated 1911 by Major General, Commanding, JF Bell, addressing his commanding officer regarding officer dress; the second handwritten in ink and dated 1913, from a soldier at the Army/Navy Club in Manila writing home to his sister.
