Notes:

Birgit Skiöld was a pioneering Swedish-born printmaker and modernist who became a central figure in postwar British art. Based in London, she founded the UK’s first open-access professional print studio in 1958, which became a hub for artists like David Hockney and Eduardo Paolozzi. Her own work pushed the boundaries of printmaking, using techniques like etching, embossing, and lithography to create abstract, poetic compositions inspired by nature and movement. A passionate educator and innovator, Skiöld played a key role in elevating printmaking as a fine art, and her legacy lives on through major public collections and the Birgit Skiöld Memorial Trust.
