An early George III sterling silver cast candlestick, London 1763 by Thomas Heming (reg. 12th June 1745)

Of quartefoil form the base with stepped gadrooned rim the base with four splayed scallop shells adjoined by C scrolls. The column of panelled form with C scroll and shell knop, the capital with shells. Fully marked underneath and with lion passant and maker’s mark to capital, scratched numeral 2 underneath.

Height - 24.6 cm / 9.75 inches

Weight – 718 grams / 23.08 ozt

Heming was appointed principle Goldsmith to the King between 1760-1782. He was apprenticed to Peter Archambo on 7 March 1738. The present lot may be a simplified version of a form of candlestick offered as a set of four with some similar elements and also on a shaped circular or quartefoil base,of 1762 by Heming, offered at Sotheby’s London, 4 Nov 2012, lot 403
