Autograph Collection.- Composers Collection of letters from various international composers, addressed to Mr Richardson, comprising: Sir Thomas Armstrong (two autograph letters and a thank-you postcard, one letter reading "You'd be surprised at the interest my letter has aroused. It's quite embarrassing, and suggests that many people are interested in this matter of hand-writing and getting the tools for it", 17 September 1984); Sir Richard Rodney Bennett (four typed letters, including one thanking Mr Richardson "for your very kind letter about my award for the score of Murder on the Orient Express. I was delighted and honoured", 1 March 1975; another letter reads "I am indeed grateful to you for your kind wishes for the first performance of 'Zodiac’ and join you in hoping for its success. I obtained great pleasure from writing the piece and hope it will give equal pleasure to the listener", 25 August 1976); Sir Lennox Berkeley (four cards and two letters, mostly thanking the recipient for his birthday wishes, one letter reading "It was most kind of you to write congratulating me on my appointment as President of the Cheltenham Arts Festival. It is indeed a great honour for me and look forward to being thus associated with it", 30 January 1977); Michael Berkeley (one card replying on behalf of his father, and one letter saying "one of the best things about getting the prize has been the pleasure it seems to have given to people other than myself", 27 March 1977); Sir Ernest Bullock (one letter saying "I wrote to the daily Telegraph in order to add to the report...the information that Sir William McKie conducted the choir and orchestra in 1953, and I did the same in 1937", 1 February 1977); Alan Hoddinott (two thank-you notes); Sir Antony Hopkins (two typed letters, one thanking Richardson for his "kind congratulations on my C.B.E. ", n.d.); Peter Hurford (typed note thanking Mr Richardson for his letter "in relation to my appointment as President of the Royal College of Organists", 4 November 1980); Dr Francis Alan Jackson (two letters, one saying "It has been wonderful to have so many expressions of pleasure from friends old and new, near and far, and this has helped to make this a time we shall all remember. It is a great encouragement, too, in one's work, for the years that remain - and I am fairly certain I shall not do another 30 at York Minster", 13 January 1978); Otto Klemperer (thank you letter with facsimile signature); Sir Philip Ledger (letter thanking Richardson for his "kind letter of congratulations following my knighthood in the Birthday Honours", 20 June 1999); Raymond John Leppard (three thank-you postcards and one letter thanking Richardson for "understanding...my reasons for going to live in America. It was not a very easy decision but one that seemed finally to make itself", 1 November 1976); Andrew Lloyd Webber (typed note thanking Richardson for his letter); Julian Lloyd Webber (typed letter thanking Richardson for writing "about my broadcast of the Elgar Cello Concerto on October 26th. It always means a great deal to receive reassurance that one's performances are appreciated and enjoyed", 15th November 1976); William Lloyd Webber (typed thank you letter); Sir Peter Maxwell Davies (brief note saying in part "Life gets ever fuller and more complex and intense. Feel very responsible about the Dartington position", 13 September 1979); Richard Popplewell (autograph thank-you letter); Sir David Willcocks (six letters, mostly about his honours and awards, one about his Honorary Fellowship of King's College, Cambridge says "The news of my election have me very great pleasure and I am glad to feel that I am once again closely associated with the College in which I have spent so many years of my life, 20 October 1980; in another letter he writes he is glad Richardson "enjoyed the TV presentation of part of the Bach Choir Family Carols Concert from the Royal Albert Hall", 8 February 1981); v.s., all letters with original mailing envelopes (40)
