General Sir Montagu George North Stopford (1892-1971)
British Army Interest Album, 1909-1914

An album comprising approx.300 early silver gelatin prints (mixed matte, sepia-toned, and glossy), of the British Army General M.G. North Stopford, image sizes between 7.5 x 1.5cm (smallest) and 21 x 29cm (largest), some hand-cut in various shapes, and some with manuscript captions in the lower margin. The album features views of England (1909-1910), including the Isle of Mull; Felixstone, 1910; Whitby, 1911; together with images of the Coronation Day of His Majesty George V in 1911; and group portraits of the cadets at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, 1910.


The album also features an extensive group of images documenting Stopford's missions in India between 1911-1914, and includes landmarks of Calcutta decorated for the King's Visit in 1911; further assorted famous landmarks of Delhi, including Humayon's Tomb, Jumma Musjid, and the Tomb of Nizam ud Din, 1913; a panoramic view in 4 parts depicting the Maidan from Dalhouse Barracks, overall measuring 6.7 x37.6cm; British Army soldiers marching and training in various camp sites, such as Baracao Camp, Kuldana, and Nerh Camp, Kashimir,1912; together with views of the surrounding landscapes, such as the Jhelum River at Ghari; views from the hills above Baramulla, forest around Kuldana and Gulmar Bazaar, Kashimir, 1912. The album also includes official Army letters and documents referring to Second Lieutenant M.G. North Stopford.

General Montagu G. North Stopford was a Senior British Army officer who fought during both the First and the Second World Wars. The present album refers to his early years in the British Army, when he was commissioned as a second lieutenant into the Rifle Brigade, serving in India from 1912 to 1914. After the outbreak of the First World War, he returned to England in August 1914.
