Marcantonio Pasqualini (1614–1691) Crowned by Apollo
oil on canvas
73.5 x 61 cm (29 x 24 in)
framed

The present lot is an iteration of a 1641 painting by Andrea Sacchi depicting the celebrated male soprano Marcantonio Pasqualini (1614–1691) crowned by Apollo originally in the Palazzo Pallavicini and now in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.

Sacchi’s composition was well known already in the 17th century, existing in a drawn version by Carlo Maratti (1625-1713) in the Royal Collection probably acquired by George III in 1762, and a printed version by Robert Strange from 1755 which can be seen mounted on the wall of the famous ‘Print Room’, Castletown House, Kildare, Ireland.

Pasqualini joined the choir of the Sistine Chapel in 1630, and from 1632 played in many operas at the Palazzo Barberini, with Sacchi designing sets.
