The cover delicately carved through layers of red and black lacquer to depict a trio of chrysanthemums amongst leafy sprays and blossoming buds, the exterior of the box with related motifs, the interior and base lacquered black

A comparable box and cover from the Yamanaka Tateo collection, dated to the Song Dynasty, was sold at Christie's Hong Kong, 29 Nov 2024, lot 1373. Another box and cover was sold at Christie's South Kensington, 14 Nov 2003, lot 33. Another related box and cover, this one dated to the 15th century and signed Zhang Cheng Zao, was sold at Christie's Hong Kong, 29 Nov 2005, lot 1531.
