TWO KALAMKARI BOCCHAS

Each of square format, the first with a white cotton ground resist-dyed in madder red to reveal repeating rows of alternating butis with blue and ochre highlights, the scrolling frieze of elegant floral meander within narrower floral borders, edged with a deep bias-cut tape of narrow patterned stripes in indigo, red, ochre, and white, lined with roller-printed floral cotton, 109cm x 113cm; and the latter with a white field printed with scrolling floral repeats in blue, pink, and yellow, the centre printed in dark brown ink in nasta’liq script containing information relating to the commission, indicating the name Rukn Ul Mulk, dated 1317 AH (1899 AH), the uppermost line reduced, edged with blue bias-cut cotton tape, lined in white cotton, 84cm x 85cm.
