Wilberforce (William)

Wilberforce (William)

Letter signed ('W.Wilberforce') to Saxe Bannister, reading "Sir, I confess that the plan which you have sent me would require for its execution greater funds than can be easily raised for it at a time when there are so many different objects to interest benevolence and call forth Christian zeal in this country. But I must confess the Paper was read over to me at a time when my mind was much engrossed by other important matters and it has not received that full consideration which its importance claims. I would not however any longer delay writing to you, lest my silence should carry an impression of inattention or indifference", two pages, mild folding marks with light splitting to the left margin, closed tear above the lower left corner, ink stain to lower right corner, age-related toning overall, 8vo, Kensington Gore, 31 March 1820; and another signature. (2)

***Saxe Bannister (1790-1877) is most famous for having being the first Attorney-General of New South Wales, Australia, from 1823 to 1826. He had a keen interest in philanthropic causes, and was concerned with the welfare of children, convicts, and especially Aborigines.
