André Derain was a pioneering artist known for his pivotal role in the development of Fauvism, an early 20th-century art movement characterized by bold colour use and expressive brushwork, as showcased in the juxtaposing pigments used throughout the present example. Born in Chatou, France, Derain began his studies at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he met Henri Matisse, with whom he would later collaborate. His early works were heavily influenced by Post-Impressionism.

In 1905, the artist exhibited at the Salon d'Automne in Paris, where their use of bold colours and dynamic brushstrokes were well received. This period marked a innovative point in his artistic career, with paintings such as The Turning Road, L'Estaque (1906) showcasing his radical approach to colour and form, which remains influential today.
