A George III sterling silver teapot, London 1785 by Charles Chesterman

Of oval cylindrical form with a tubular straight spout opposite a wooden C scroll handle pinned to sockets. The domed hinged lid surmounted by a detachable strawberry finial upon a leafy calyx. The body with engraved foliate swags adjoining an elliptical cartouche with tied ribbon and scroll surmount. One side later engraved with a crest of out of a ducal coronet, a unicorn's head, between two ostrich-feathers, all above the motto Perseverando. The lid and base with engraved bands of bright cut rosettes and trailing scrolls, the finials atop of an eight-pointed star. Fully marked underneath and with lion passant to the lid. Also, later stamped underneath, SILVER – LYON FOSTER LANE.

Length – 25 cm / 9.9 inches

Weight – 308 grams / 9.9 ozt

The crest and motto are for Abbot, an borne by the Baron Colchester (est. 1817).
